La Quebrada de Humahuaca is a vast mountainous valley of majestic natural beauty which was declared “Cultural and Natural Heritage of Humanity”. It is a melting pot of cultures and races where an amazing cultural interchange takes place.  “El Río Grande” (the Big River) that goes along this valley is surrounded by unbelievable hills of different colors.

Purmamarca is the first stop in our trip. It is a charming town of great beauty that provides a big variety of accommodation from hotels of high standard to guest’s houses, camping sites and cabins. There are also good restaurants and folk clubs. This town is surrounded by colorful scenarios. You have “El Cerro de Siete Colores” (the hill of seven colors) that is unique in the country and also a great road with reddish hills on the side with fascinating natural shapes.

There is also a permanent craft market in the town and a church of colonial architecture.

Following this road we get to Tilcara, the archeological capital of Jujuy. It is an international touristic spot. Its church was declared a “Historical Monument”. Here you can visit the Archeological Museum and “El Pucará” that was the fort built by the local indigenous to protect themselves from the Spanish. There is also a Botanic Garden with the different plants of the area.

This town is famous for its “Enero Tilcareño” (Tilcara´s January). In January youngsters and tourists gather here to celebrate with music and dances that go on all night long.  

The last stop is Humahuaca, which is 3000 meters above sea level. Jujuy´s carnival takes place here. The town of colonial architecture has some museums that display the craftwork, paintings and sculptures of the region.

There is an old clock in the Town Hall that opens some doors and lets an image of San Francisco Solano to come out and give the blessings to the people. On top of some staircases there is a monument that every year serves as a background for music bands that perform there.
